The South Temiskaming Active Travel Organization (STATO).
STATO's mission statement is "To develop, manage, preserve and promote a system of integrated, year-round, Active Travels in South Temiskaming for non-motorized public use."
The stated objectives of the organization are to:
a) Develop and oversee a trail system in Temiskaming Shores connecting Dymond, New Liskeard and Haileybury,
b) Pursue trails development with a focus on environment sustainability and harmony as well as economic self-sufficiency, and
c) Work in partnership with other communities in South Temiskaming and the surrounding regions for the development of a broad network of integrated and interconnected trails.
As STATO's slogan quotes, "From a Dream to a Reality 1km at a time", we are part way there with 16kms of the STATO Trail completed. The STATO Organization is a group of people who organize fundraisers to raise funds that go directly to the City of Temiskaming Shores to continue the construction of the STATO Trail. STATO has worked tirelessly to raise funds to build the trail through numerous fundraisers, such as a New Year's Gala, Fashion shows, Golf & Hockey Tournaments, Fish Derbies, Amazing Race events, numerous sales drives, biking/running events, and many others. With the help of the City of Temiskaming Shores we have also received government funding from the Minister of Health, Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Government of Ontario as well as FedNor. Of course we cannot forget our local businesses that support STATO through all of these numerous events and also through their Corporate Donations.
The focus of the organization is the construction of a paved trail enabling all residents and visitors of Temiskaming Shores to enjoy the benefits of walking, cycling, jogging and roller blading across the City on a safe and secure route. A connector of safe active transportation would be used by citizens traveling to work each day, children going to sporting activities, and those wishing to engage in physical activity to better their health, while enjoying the vista of beautiful Lake Temiskaming. This would also encourage visitors to the area for the purpose of actively traveling this scenic route. Most people are pursuing a healthier life style and the "free" pathway will promote physical activity, be environmentally friendly and best of all is available to everyone.
